Apple Releases Firmware Update 7.7.8 and 7.6.8 for AirPort Routers

Apple on Tuesday released new firmware updates for its Wi-Fi-based Airport routers, including the Airport Extreme, Airport Express, and AirPort Time Capsule. The 7.7.8 update applies to 802.11ac base stations, while the 7.6.8 update is available for 802.11n base stations.

About AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.7.8

Firmware update 7.7.8 is recommended for all AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac. This update addresses an issue that may prevent AirPort base stations from appearing in AirPort Utility when Back to My Mac is enabled.

To apply the firmware updates, do the following:

  1. Make sure that you’re connected to the Internet.
  2. If you’re using your base station to share a hard drive on your network, make sure that none of the devices on your network are using that drive. Updating an AirPort base station causes it and its network services to be temporarily unavailable.
  3. Open AirPort Utility on one of your devices.
On Mac, AirPort Utility is installed in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, get AirPort Utility from the App Store.
  4. If AirPort Utility shows a numbered red badge next to the name of a base station, click it for details.
If the base station is protected by a device password, you might not see a badge until you click the base station and enter the password.
  5. Install the update:
    • On Mac, the details pop-up shows an Update button when an update is available. Click the button to install the update.
    • On iOS devices, tap Version on the details screen. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.

While Apple has reportedly dropped development on any new AirPort wireless routers, the Cupertino firm will continue to release updates to fix bugs for at least the near future.
