iPhone 7 Plus Most Popular ‘Plus’ Model Apple Has Ever Released

During the Q1 2017 earnings conference call on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook told listeners that the iPhone 7 Plus enjoyed a “higher portion of new product mix than we’ve ever seen with Plus models in the past.”

Cook says the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus – which boasts a twin-lens camera system featuring a standard wide-angle lens well as a telephoto lens – outsold both the 2014 iPhone 6 Plus and the 2015 iPhone 6s Plus models.

The 7 Plus camera boasts an iPhone-exclusive “Portrait” mode that makes use of the twin lenses to create DSLR-style “bokeh” images, offering blurred backgrounds which highlight the main subject in the foreground.

Cook said Apple underestimated the demand of the iPhone 7 Plus, leading to supply and demand issues which impacted sales of the device. The handset’s dual-lense camera system proved to be particularly popular with customers, leading to a shortage of the device.

Apple saw record iPhone sales in the fiscal first quarter of 2017, selling a total of 78.3 million units. iPhone sales were a large contributor to Apple’s record results for the quarter when it brought in $78.4 billion in revenue and $17.89 billion in profits, the highest quarterly revenue in Apple history. The iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and Services all brought in record revenues.
