iOS 11 Allows Users to Stop Apps From Always Tracking Their Location

iOS 11 will offer users the ability to better restrict an app from always tracking their location. The new mobile operating system, now in beta, will allow users to restrict an app to using their location data only when the app is being used.

In iOS 10 and before, the setting was only available on apps that offered the option. Apps like Uber only offered options to ‘Never’ or ‘Always’ allow Location Access. The app could always have access to your location, even when it wasn’t open.

Now Apple looks to be improving users’ privacy by giving them an additional option to protect their location data, and therefore their privacy. This is a welcome change, not only on the privacy front but the battery front as well. The new setting should help improve battery life on iOS 11 devices, as it will limit the use of GPS by background apps.

It should be noted that this is the first beta of iOS 11, and things can change greatly between now and September, when the upcoming operating system is expected to be released to the public.
