Apple Releases tvOS 11.4 – Includes AirPlay 2 Support

Apple on Tuesday released tvOS 11.4 for fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV devices. The update brings support for AirPlay 2.

The tvOS 11.4 update, when used with devices running iOS 11.4, provides support for AirPlay 2, which brings multi-room audio functionality to Apple devices, allowing the same music to be streamed to and played on multiple devices throughout a home.

The update makes an Apple TV available as an AirPlay 2-compatible device, which can be controlled through the Apple TV, via an iOS device, or via Apple’s virtual personal assistant, Siri, using voice commands.

AirPlay 2 is only compatible with the Apple TV and Apple’s HomePod smart speaker for now, but is expected to expand to other devices in the near future.

Today’s update also includes performance improvements, security enhancements, and various bug fixes.

The update will be downloaded automatically on Apple TV units set to automatically download updates, or the device can be manually updated by going into the Settings app and selecting “System” -> “Software Updates” -> “Update Software.”
