Apple Sells an Estimated 600,000 HomePod Smart Speakers in 1st Quarter

Apple Sells an Estimated 600,000 HomePod Smart Speakers in 1st Quarter

A new report estimates Apple may have sold only 600,000 units of their HomePod speaker in the quarter ended in March. If the estimate is correct, it would give Apple a mere 6% of the smart speaker market.

The report, by Strategy Analytics (via AppleInsider) indicates Apple is well-behind first place Amazon in smart speaker sales volume. The online retail giant is estimated to have shipped 4 million Echo speakers during the quarter, for a 102% year-over-year increase.

Google snagged second place, with 2.4 million Home devices sold. That is a 709% increase. Third place was taken by China’s Alibaba, which shipped about 700,000 units for a 7.6% share. Apple ranked fourth.

Those raw numbers only tell part of the story, as the Home Pod was only available for part of the quarter, debuting on February 9. Plus, average selling price might have something to do with the numbers, as the other smart speakers are priced well below the HomePod’s $349 retail price.
