Instagram Horizontal Feed for Main Posts Was Meant to be a Test for a ‘Very Small’ Group of Users

The new Instagram Horizontal Feed feature that scrolled the main feed horizontally instead of vertically recently hit a large number of users’ devices, causing an uproar from users who didn’t appreciate the new feature. The new feature was meant to roll out to a small number of users as a test.

MacRumors:

This test hit enough users around the world to get “Instagram Update” and “#NewInstagram” trending on Twitter (via The Independent), but Matt Navarra has confirmed that it was just a test that was meant for a “very small” group of individuals.

The update caused users to have to scroll through their Instagram posts in the same way they do Instagram Stories, by tapping to scroll left or right. This frustrated many of the users who saw the update, leading to numerous frustrated “Instagram is ruined” Twitter posts.

Users who saw the update should see their Instagram display revert to the vertical scrolling method soon.

Those who got the update saw a brief message: “Introducing a new way to move through posts. Tap through posts, just like you tap through stories.” The Independent reported that a massive number of users in the United Kingdom received the update on Thursday afternoon.

Instagram Stories have grown to be a popular feature since the feature’s debut in 2016. The update was an attempt to mimic the feature’s format for normal Instagram posts.
