DOOM and DOOM 2 is Now Available for iPhone and iPad

We couldn’t be happier to announce that id Software worked together with Bethesda to release DOOM and DOOM II for gameplay on iPhone and iPad. The occasion is to commemorate the 25th anniversary of DOOM II.

If you grew up in the 90’s, you might appreciate the addition of this blood-bath, death-match classic game to the iOS App Store.

The original DOOM came out in 1993 to follow the success of its predecessor, Wolfenstein 3D. DOOM II came out later in 1994. It took a full decade for DOOM III to hit the shelfs with an entirely re-factored graphic engine.

After downloading the game from the App Store it feels very nostalgic to listen to the old sound FX as well as the music that goes along with the gameplay.

There are, however, two negatives to address.

While you might think that a multi-player gameplay is available with the $4.99 purchase in the App Store, it is not. You can only play a single-player gameplay. This is a little bit of a surprise, given that the DOOM did so well during LAN parties of the 90’s era, which were all about the multi-player.

Secondly, you have to log in to your Bethesda account to start playing at all. Essentially, it’s no email address, no play. We could only feel like DOOM is a lead acquisition tool for Bethesda to build their marketing list. And that’s a little sad. The game that was once “the best game ever” is now only as good as content for growing customer prospecting database.

Android fans don’t be worried, you have your now version of these two head-slashing, monster-killing, gaming gems in the Play Store.

Update: Now you can play Doom and Doom 2 at 60fps.
