Apple Offers Support Advice for AirPods Pro Users Experiencing Crackling Audio and Other Issues

Apple Offers Support Advice for AirPods Pro Users Experiencing Crackling Audio and Other Issues

An increasing number of AirPods Pro users are complaining that their expensive wireless earphones are not working as well as when they were new. Users complain of crackling noises coming from their earbuds, while others complain of noise cancellation issues.

Apple has responded to these complaints with a pair of support articles that offer troubleshooting steps to attempt to remedy issues with crackling and static noises or issues with Active Noise Cancellation.

The first support article offers steps to follow if your AirPods Pro are making static or crackling noises.

  1. Make sure that you have the latest software on your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
  2. Check that your connected device is nearby, and there’s no wireless interference or obstructions between you and your device.
  3. Listen to audio from a different app to see if the app causes the issue.

If you still experience sound quality issues—or if the issues increase in loud environments, with exercise, or while talking on the phone—contact Apple Support.

If you’re having issues with Active Noise Cancellation, Apple recommends the following:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest software on your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
  2. Put both AirPods Pro in your ears and check that Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is turned on.
  3. Clean the mesh located on the top of your AirPods Pro. Sometimes Active Noise Cancellation can be affected if debris or earwax builds up in the area shown below.

If this happens, you might experience:

    • A loss of bass sound
    • An increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise
  4. If Active Noise Cancellation still isn’t working as expected, contact Apple Support.

We also suggest you make sure your AirPods Pro have the latest firmware installed. Apple recently released new firmware for the AirPods Pro, the software will be installed over-the-air while the AirPods Pro are connected via Bluetooth to an iOS device.
