TSMC 3nm Process Closer to Being Finalized, Paving Way to 2022 Mass Production

TSMC is getting closer to finalizing its 3-nanometer process that could be used to fabricates Apple’s A-series or Apple Silicon chips in 2022.

TSMC has long produced chips for Apple, including the A12Z Bionic chips used in current iPad Pro models. TSMC has long worked to shrink its fabrication process. It is currently working to shrink its 7nm process down to 5nm and is also looking forward to making chips using a 3-nanometer process.

Rumors from earlier this year indicated TSMC was on track to create chips using a 3nm process in 2022, with risk production expected to take place in 2021. A MyDrivers report cited a company official, the timing of risk production in 2021 will be officially announced by the chip foundry before the end of the year.

TSMC says the 3-nanometer process will offer quite a few benefits over even the recent 5-nanometer process. When compared to the 5nm process, 3nm will have a 15% greater transistor density, boast a performance increase of between 10% and 15%, and offer energy efficiency savings of between 20% and 25%.

We currently expect to see TSMC being used to produce the new upcoming Apple Silicon chips, which will power new Mac models as Apple moves away from the use of Intel processors over the next two years.
