‘Good Morning America’ Scores the First Hands-On With the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

Apple’s iPhone 12 press event on Tuesday was a pre-recorded online event, which meant there wasn’t the usual hands-on time for the press to play with the new iPhones immediately following the event. In lieu of that, Apple gave ABC’s “Good Morning America” reporter Becky Worley some hands-on time with the devices.

This resulted in a five-minute segment on her impressions of the new iPhone 12 (in Blue) and the iPhone 12 Pro (in Pacific Blue). This gives us the first non-Apple scripted look at the new handsets, as well as a look at how the new MagSafe magnetic wallets quickly attach to the back of the devices.

The morning show segment also includes a short talk with Apple VP of ‌iPhone‌ marketing Kaiann Drance, who introduced the ‌iPhone‌ 12 during Apple’s digital event. When Worley asked Drance about the lack of EarPods and a power adapter in the iPhone box, France stuck with the company line that the company made the decision to leave them out because it was “the right thing to do.” Saying, customers already own them and the new handsets have so much to offer users anyway.

“…people often already have all that, and it’s sitting around in their house. Maybe they have multiple ones of that. So it was kind of the right thing to do in terms of the larger environmental goals and the larger benefits to the environment.”

Drance neglected to mention how Apple also benefits from the reduced costs of not including the two accessories in the box, helping to keep profit margins healthy, even with the addition of the expensive 5G feature to its new handsets. With fewer items in the box, Apple can make the iPhone box smaller, which means it weighs less, and more iPhones can fit on a single pallet, reducing shipping costs.

‌iPhone‌ 12 and ‌iPhone 12 Pro pre-orders‌ begin at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, and the first orders should begin arriving in customers’ hands on Friday, October 23. Customers who prefer an ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max or ‌iPhone‌ 12 mini will need to cool their heels until pre-order begins on November 6 with a launch to on November 13.
