Twitter Announces “Fleeting” Tweets for All Users

Twitter has announced the worldwide launch of a new temporary tweet option called “Fleets,” which causes a tweet to expire at the end of a 24 hour display period, causing it to then disappear from the service. Fleets will appear at the top of the Twitter timeline.

Fleets cannot be retweeted, liked, or publicly commented on. They also do not show up in search or moments, and cannot be embedded on external websites. The Fleets feature has been tested by users in numerous countries, including Brazil, Italy, India, and South Korea. In countries where the feature was tested, Twitter says Fleets helped people feel more comfortable joining the conversation – they saw people with Fleets talk more on Twitter.

You can Fleet text, reactions to Tweets, photos, or videos and customize your Fleets with various background and text options. To share a Tweet in a Fleet tap the “Share” icon at the bottom of the Tweet and then tap, “Share in Fleet.” Then, add what you think about it with some text or emojis. Soon, stickers and live broadcasting will be available in Fleets.

Fleets can include photos or videos and can be customized with different background and text options. The feature can be accessed by tapping on the “Share” icon at the bottom of a tweet and then choosing the “Share in Fleet” option.

Twitter joins other social networks in offering “ephemeral content.” Snapchat was the first to offer the feature and was soon followed by Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Instagram.

Fleets are rolling out and will soon be available for everyone in the coming days. Keep in mind though, that nothing is temporary on the internet, thanks to screenshots and copy and paste, so you can still be “canceled” 15 years from now for a Fleet you tweet today.
