Apple Music to Include Animated Album Artwork Alongside iOS 14.3 and macOS 11.1 Updates

Apple Music has gained new animated album artwork in the latest beta releases of iOS 14.3 and macOS 11.1. The feature will likely make its public debut to subscribers of the music streaming service next week when both updated operating systems are released.

While Apple Music gained animated playlist artwork alongside the release of iOS 14, MacRumors reports it looks like Apple is expanding the feature to select album artwork in iOS 14.3.

Redditor Kiogra has reported seeing animated album art in Apple Music on multiple albums, including “12 Questions” by Future Utopia, “Detroit 2” by Big Sean, and Pearl Jam’s “Gigaton.”

They are short animations and appear similar to live wallpapers on iOS – showcasing brief, colorful sequences that apparently loop infinitely.

9to5Mac notes that on the iPhone the animated artwork takes up half of the screen, but they’re the same size as regular album artwork on the iPad and Mac.

MacRumors editor Tim Hardwick tweeted one of the animations.
