Samsung to Make LTPO OLED Displays for Apple Beginning in First Half of 2021

A new note by research firm UBI Research shared by The Elec says Samsung is planning to begin manufacturing low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED displays for Apple beginning in the first half of 2021.

Samsung plans to convert its current low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT OLED display manufacturing to the new technology, as Apple plans to use LTPO displays in its iPhone 13 lineup.

LTPO displays are more energy-efficient than standard OLED displays and will allow iPhone 13 devices to use a 120Hz refresh rate.

The Elec says that Apple will use LTPO TFT OLED panels for the higher-tier iPhone models launching in 2021. meanwhile, LG Display will provide standard LTPS TFT OLED panels for the lower-tier models.
