Apple Store Staff in Maryland Makes Historic Vote to Unionize

Apple Store employees at Apple’s retail location Towson, Maryland have officially voted to unionize, becoming the first Apple retail location to do so in the United States.

As reported by CNBC, employees at the ‌Apple Store‌ in Towson, Maryland voted 65 for and 33 against a call to join the Machinists Union, despite Apple’s efforts to tamp down unionization efforts. 110 employees were eligible to vote Wednesday through Saturday evening.

“We did it Towson! We won our union vote! Thanks to all who worked so hard and all who supported!” Towson organizers tweeted.

The National Labor Relations Board still needs to verify the votes before Apple is required to begin negotiations with the union.

Apple’s retail chief recently Deirdre O’Brien pushed back against unionization efforts at some of the company’s brick-and-mortar locations in a new video to staff members. O’Brien told staff members that the efforts could slow workplace progress and potentially harm the relationship between Apple and its employees.

Apple retail workers in Atlanta accused the company of violating the National Labor Relations Act and countering an ongoing union drive at an Apple Store location in the city.

The company has circulated anti-union materials to select store managers and has also hired anti-union lawyers to respond to the Atlanta unionization push.
