Bloomberg’s Gurman: ‘Extreme Sports’ Apple Watch Coming in 2022 – Larger Display, Metal Casing, and Longer Battery Life

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is working on an “extreme sports” Apple Watch that will feature a larger screen and a metal case that will better stand up to abuse.

Gurman says the new rugged Apple Watch will have a display measuring almost two inches diagonally, the biggest Apple Watch display to date. (The current Apple Watch Series 7 has a 1.9-inch diagonal screen.) It will have approximately 7% more screen area than the 45mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌, and a display resolution of 410 x 502 pixels. Gurman believes Apple may use the extra display area to provide more fitness metrics.

According to Gurman, the new watch will include a more shatter-resistant screen, improved impact resistance, and protection in the form of a metal material that is stronger than aluminum. A larger battery will offer improved battery life.

The sport-focused version of the Apple Watch will be sold alongside the standard ‌Apple Watch Series 8‌ planned for later this year and the Apple Watch SE.
