Facebook Messenger for Mac Gains Native M1/M2 Support

It took a couple of years but Facebook Messenger has finally been updated to provide native support for M1 and M2 Macs. The update should lead to better performance and a better overall experience when running the app.

While the Facebook Messenger “What’s New” mention says only: “New! Messenger has a new look and more ways to connect with friends,” Daniel Halawi (via 9to5Mac) spotted the universal compatibility in the recent 158.0 update.

Universal compatibility with Apple Silicon can make an app perform better, be more responsive, and use less power.

Facebook Manager for macOS features include:

Made for big screens and close connections. Get access to free* texting, and high-quality voice and video chat built specifically for desktop.

MADE FOR DESKTOP, MADE FOR YOU

Type even faster, multi-task while video chatting so you never miss a moment and stay connected with desktop notifications.

SPEND QUALITY TIME IN HIGH QUALITY

Host one-on-one meetings or bring the whole group together with free*, high-quality voice and video chat features.

GET THE GROUP TOGETHER WITH ROOMS

Send a link to group video chat with anyone, even if they don’t have Messenger. Host up to 50 people with no time limits.

SAY ‘HI’ IN LOW LIGHT WITH DARK MODE

Cut down glare from your screen in low-light situations, so you can stay in touch no matter when or where you are.

EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH STICKERS, GIFS AND EMOJIS

Tell your story with stickers, gifs and emojis when words aren’t enough.

SHARE WITH FRIENDS

Send photos and videos to keep your close friends up to speed. Receive files for even more productivity.

While Facebook Messenger is the first Meta app to feature native Apple Silicon support, an update is looming for WhatsApp’s macOS app, which is currently in beta testing. The new beta is built on Apple’s Catalyst technology, which allows developers to easily port iOS apps to macOS. The new app is based on WhatsApp for iOS and uses the system’s native APIs.

Facebook Messenger for Mac is available free, in the Mac App Store.
