Apple’s Mac shipments were down 40% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2023, according to analysts at IDC. Mac shipments suffered despite the launches of the M2 MacBook Pro and M2 Mac mini during the quarter. (Via 9to5Mac)
The primary reason for the falling shipping numbers in the computer industry can be traced back to the end of the pandemic boom. Apple suffered the most among PC makers during the quarter, down 40%, while the overall market shipments shrank 29%.
IDC says Apple shipped 4.1 million units between January to March 2023, earning it fourth place. Meanwhile, market leader Lenovo shipped 12.7 million units, representing a decline of 30%.
While Apple’s 40% drop in shipments looks bad, it should be noted that the drop is due to Apple’s shining numbers in the same quarter last year, when it successfully launched the M1 MacBook Pro series.
The M2 update released in January has not made the same splash, as the M2 processor in this year’s Mac models was more of an iterative update than the M1 processor was.
