Apple Releases iOS 16.5.1 Includes Security Fixes, Fix for Lightning to USB Camera Adapter Bug

Apple today released iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1, updates to the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 operating systems, respectively.

iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1 can be downloaded on compatible iPhones and iPads, respectively, over the air by going to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Software Update.” You may want to wait a day or so to download the new update, as things could be slow, due to high demand.

According to Apple’s notes for the update, the update includes important security fixes and is recommended for all users. It also addresses a bug that could prevent charging with the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.

The security fixes take care of the following security issues:

Kernel

Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later

Impact: An app may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS released before iOS 15.7.

Description: An integer overflow was addressed with improved input validation.

WebKit

Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Apple has also released an iOS 15.7.7 security update for iPhone users whose devices are incompatible with the ‌iOS 16‌ operating system.
