Apple Launches SF Symbols 5 – Brings 700+ New Icons for Use in Apps

Apple on Thursday released SF Symbols 5, a new version of the library of iconography that it provides to developers for use in apps. The icons are designed to integrate with the San Francisco system font used in Apple devices.

SF Symbols 5 adds 700 characters, bringing the symbols total to 5,000+. New symbols in the updated include weather conditions, automotive indicators, game controller buttons, and more. The symbols can be used in apps running iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, tvOS 17, and watchOS 10.

The update also brings animated symbols, including bounce, scale, and pulse. Apple says that the animated effects bring “bring vitality to interfaces and provide feedback to user input while communicating changes in status and ongoing activity.” To support animations, symbols have been redrawn and optimized for motion.

Apple has also included improved tools for developers who want to create their own symbols, including a library of enclosure shapes, badges, and slashes, along with updated annotation tools. A new inspector allows for animation previews for system symbols and custom symbols.

Developers can use Apple’s SF Symbols wherever there are interface icons.
