Apple’s much-rumored foldable iPad is now in “intensive development” and the device could be unveiled as soon as late 2024, says a paywalled report from DigiTimes (shared by MacRumors).
DigiTimes says its supply chain sources tell it that Apple is working with suppliers on the development of the foldable iPad, with small-scale production scheduled as soon as the end of 2024. The publication believes Apple could debut the device by late 2024 or early 2025 if progress on the project remains steady.
As had been expected, Apple is apparently concentrating on a foldable iPad before attempting to tackle a foldable iPhone. Apple chose to make the iPad its first foldable device, as the device makes up a much smaller amount of Apple’s sales, compared to the iPhone. Potential issues with a foldable tablet would be easier for Apple to manage and would have less impact on Apple’s sales.
The design of the foldable iPad has reportedly not been finalized, with Apple’s procurement department taking over the lead of the project from the company’s project design team. The procurement department will look to bring down production costs, as Apple looks to achieve a more cost-effective design.
The device’s display panels and the folding hinges are said to remain an issue, as the Cupertino firm looks to LG and Samsung to provide a display that will mitigate any display creasing effect. While Apple is reported to have found a reliable supply of the hinges, it is seeking a redesign to make them more cost-effective and easier to mass produce.
DigiTimes says mass production of Apple’s first foldable should kick off in 2025. The publication believes the foldable iPad could boost tablet shipments, despite shrinking global tablet sales.
