OLED iPad and MacBook Reportedly to Feature Specialized Display Materials

A new report from The Elec claims that future models of Apple’s iPad Pro and MacBook will boast OLED panels using specialized display materials.

The report says Apple has collaborated with LG Display to integrate new OLED material sets in some of its future devices, including forthcoming ‌iPad Pro‌ and MacBook models. upcoming 11- and 13-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ models will use LG’s “RDE” OLED material set, while a next-generation MacBook, scheduled for a 2027 launch, will use LG’s subsequent “RDG” OLED material set.

According to the industry on the 23rd, LG Display is planning to apply a new material set, RDE, to Apple’s OLED iPad Pro, which is scheduled to be released next year. LG Display is applying the ‘RD’ series material set to vehicle OLED and OLED for IT products.

The vehicle OLED currently being mass-produced by LG Display and the OLED for IT products such as the iPad that will be supplied to Apple in the future use a two-stack tandem structure in which two light-emitting layers are stacked. The OLED used in Apple’s iPhone is a single stack product with one light emitting layer.

Two-stack tandem OLED has two light-emitting layers, so it can produce the same brightness with less power compared to the single-stack method. Improvements in product efficiency and lifespan are the expected effects of the two-stack tandem method. Vehicles must be used for 10 years, and IT products must be used for several years, so product lifespan must be extended.

The OLED panels designed for upcoming ‌iPad Pro‌ and MacBook models feature a two-stack tandem structure, which consists of two light-emitting layers stacked together. The two-stack OLED design can generate the same brightness levels as its single-stack counterparts but with significantly lowered power consumption and an extended lifespan.
