Disregard what I said this morning, because Apple today released iOS 17.2.1 for the iPhone, as well as iPadOS 17.2.1 for the iPad. The update can be downloaded and installed on compatible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Software Update.”
The iOS 17.2.1 update includes unspecified bug fixes, according to Apple’s release notes for the update.
This update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for all users.

We don’t know at this time whether or not the update fixes a bug that causes the Messages app’s icon to disappear when rearranging app icons on the Home Screen
Apple is currently testing its iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 updates which are expected to be released sometime in January.
