We’re seeing new rumors about a new Apple TV being readied for release during the first half of 2024. MacRumors has shared a recap of the rumored new features and changes for the streaming device.
The last time we saw an update to the Apple TV was back in November 2022, when it received an A15 Bionic chip, an expanded 128GB storage option, a slightly thinner and lighter design, HDR10+ support, a Siri Remote with a USB-C port, lower pricing, and more.
Expected Changes
Apple is expected to release a new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K next year with the following changes.
Faster, More Efficient Chip
The 2024 Apple TV is expected to boast a faster and more efficient processor compared to the current model, says Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. Possibilities include the A16 Bionic chip that powered the iPhone 14 Pro models or the A17 Pro chip that currently powers the iPhone 15 Pro models.
More Affordable
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the next Apple TV to boast a lower price than the current model. Kuo has said that a “sub-$100 price” would be the “sweet spot” for the Apple TV, but exact pricing for the new model has yet to be announced.
Apple has made previous moves that support a lower price prediction, as both the 2010 (2nd-generation) and 2012 (3rd-gen) versions of the Apple TV carried a $99 price tag at launch in the United States, and Apple eventually marked the 3rd-gen model down to $69. A lower-priced Apple TV would help the streaming box to compete with lower-priced streaming devices from Roku, Amazon, and Google.
The current Apple TV in the U.S. starts at $129 with 64GB of storage, and $149 for the 128GB model.
Design Change
None of the rumors so far have mentioned any major external design changes are expected for the next Apple TV.
When Would a New 2024 Apple TV be Released?
According to Gurman, Apple plans to release the next Apple TV in the first half of 2024, meaning we should see a launch by the end of June, if things stay on schedule.
