Bloomberg reports that Apple is continuing its discussions with Google and OpenAI to use their generative large-language models to power new AI features for the iPhone in iOS 18. The report says no formal announcement is expected until summer.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has promised that the company will “break new ground” in AI this year, and Apple is widely rumored to be working on new AI capabilities for its upcoming iPhone operating system. Apple is reportedly placing its focus on AI features that can operate solely on-device, requiring no internet connection.
To drive more powerful cloud-based generative AI features, such as the ability to create images and write essays based on single prompts, Apple is said to be seeking an AI partner that has the necessary large-scale hardware infrastructure and compute capabilities already in place.
Siri is expected to be the major beneficiary of the AI improvements that Apple has planned for iOS 18 and one leaker has indicated that Apple will use large-language models to turn Siri into the “ultimate virtual assistant.”
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on enhanced interaction between Siri and the Messages app. Siri will be able to auto-complete sentences more effectively, while also have the ability to answer complex questions.
Some investors suggest that if Apple can’t “boost its AI credibility,” investors will start Apple as a stock like Coca-Cola Co.—a solid performer with reliable revenue, but lacking the hypergrowth investors demand.
