Rumor: New Scratch Resistant Anti-Reflective Display for Apple’s iPhone 17

We are not yet sure exactly what new features this fall’s iPhone 16 lineup will bring, but yeah, let’s talk iPhone 17 rumors. A new rumor coming out of Asia claims next year’s iPhone 17 will boast an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than the “Ceramic Shield” material found on the current iPhone 15 handsets.

Chinese Weibo leakerĀ Instant Digital claimed on Tuesday that the outer glass on the iPhone 17 will have a “super-hard anti-reflective layer” that is “more scratch-resistant than you think.” The leaker claims that the coating equipment has just been handed over to China’s supply chain, but not in time for the feature to make it to this year’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup.

“Ceramic Shield” is the marketing name for a glass-ceramic material jointly developed by Corning and Apple. Apple claims the Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 15 is “tougher than any smartphone glass.”

Samsung recently debuted its newest Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has a Corning Gorilla Glass Armor display panel. Corning says, the Armor panel cuts reflections by 75% compared to a typical glass surface, making it resistant to micro scratches. Corning also claims the panels offer over 4x more scratch resistance than competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses.

While We don’t know if Apple will be adopting Gorilla Glass Armor for the iPhone 17, the description does appear to match the leaker’s claims.

Corning has been an Apple supplier for quite a while, with Gorilla Glass used in devices across Apple’s product lineup.
