Well-connected Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is working on a lighter version of its AirPods Max headphones for mass production in 2027.
Kuo shared his prediction on X (Twitter). However, he provided no additional details on what kind of weight reduction Apple might be able to pull off with its over-ear noise-canceling headphones.
AirPods may not see significant updates until 2026 (aligning with my earlier prediction that IR camera-equipped AirPods would enter mass production in 2026). A lighter version of the AirPods Max is expected to enter mass production in 2027.
AirPods可能要到2026年才會有顯著更新…
— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 18, 2025
Apple last updated the AirPods Max in September, when it changed the design of the AirPods Max to use a USB-C charging port in place of a Lightning port, and added new color options. Bloomberg reported in November that Apple has “no concrete plans” to update the headphones again “in a meaningful way.”
The current AirPods Max weigh 13.6 ounces (386.2 grams).
In the same X post, Kuo said that AirPods may not see significant updates until 2026, when he expects to see IR camera-equipped AirPods enter mass production.
