Apple Wallet Driver’s Licenses to Expand to 4 New U.S. States

Apple added support for digital IDs to Apple Wallet on the iPhone back in 2022, but since the feature requires states to implement support, the rollout has been rather slow. In 2021, Apple said that it was in “discussions with many more states” and was optimistic that Wallet IDs would be available nationwide in the future.

Now comes word that four new US states will soon launch the feature.

North Carolina’s DMV recently announced that it plans to launch a mobile ID program later this year. WRAL reports that North Carolina residents will be able to set up a digital ID through a new NC Wallet app starting in December, with Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet support to follow in “early 2027.”

According MacRumors, it has seen code indicating that Apple Wallet IDs are also coming to Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, although the report did not mention a timeframe for availability.

Apple Wallet IDs are coming soon to these four states:

• North Carolina
• Oklahoma
• Utah
• Virginia

Residents of states already in the program can add a license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app by opening it, tapping on the “+” button, and following the onscreen instructions.

The 13 states that currently offer driver’s licenses in the Wallet app:

• Arizona
• Maryland
• Colorado
• Georgia
• Ohio
• Hawaii
• California
• Iowa
• New Mexico
• Montana
• North Dakota
• West Virginia
• Illinois
• Arkansas

The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Coming Soon

The feature will also soon work with Japan’s My Number Card in the future. 100 million plus Japanese residents currently have My Number Card IDs, allowing them to receive services at over 60,000 convenience stores around the country, through online portals, and in other settings such as hospitals and government agencies.

Digital Passport Support

Users that live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, can create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport, and present it on their iPhone or Apple Watch.

All Digital ID data is encrypted, ensuring that your personal data is protected against tampering and theft. You will not need to unlock your device or show your device or hand it over to TSA officials to present your Digital ID.
