Apple today unveiled its much anticipated foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo. In addition to being the first foldable iPhone, it is also the thinnest iPhone ever. It features a 5.4-inch outer display when closed, opening up to a 7.6-inch inner display.
The new handset provides an expanded area for viewing video content, while providing more real estate for multitasking and gaming. A special nano-texture finish minimizes glare to improve the user’s viewing experience.
Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a compact, pocketable design. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally. Apple says the iPhone Duo’s precision hinge offers a smooth, satisfying feel with every use.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone,” said John Ternus, Apple’s CEO. “With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go, whether you’re enjoying content, multitasking across apps, or gaming.”
When the iPhone Duo is closed it can be comfortably used one-handed and fits easily in a pocket. The Duo’s 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that provides 90% as much screen area as the iPhone 18 Pro. When opened, the 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display is 50% larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. A premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface. Beneath the inner display, a new FaceTime camera stays hidden when not in use.
Both displays share the same aspect ratio, providing a continual experience whether the iPhone Duo is open or closed. Both displays boast ProMotion, Always On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Later this year, iPhone Duo users will be able to take advantage of Apple Pencil with USB-C support, allowing them to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display.
Apple went back to Touch ID, which is integrated into the side button, meaning whether iPhone Duo is open or closed, it will provide easy, secure, and consistent authentication. Users can unlock their iPhone Duo using their Apple Watch.
The iPhone Duo’s advanced camera system oncludes the new 48MP Fusion Main camera. Meanwhile, the 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera — the same as on iPhone 18 Pro models — captures wider fields of view and enables macro photography. the Center Stage front camera can automatically take photos and videos in any orientation.
The foldable design and twin displays allow users to experience experiences they never have on any other iPhone. Smart Take uses on-device AI models running on A20 Proanalyze the scene in real time and automatically capture photos when subjects are posing.
Users can take selfies with the higher-resolution rear cameras and preview their shot on the outer display. Duo Preview shows the live preview on the outer display, helping subjects pose, check their framing, and guide the shot.
Kid Cue plays animations from Peanuts on the outer display to grab the attention of children so they look at the camera.
Duo FaceTime lets people who are with the user join a video call on the outer display, so everyone can share the moment without crowding around one screen.
iOS 27 will deliver a familiar usage experience, while introducing new ways to interact with iPhone. Lock Screen controls, the Dock on the Home Screen, and app navigation and controls now appear on the side. When open, the iPhone Duo display shows two Home Screen pages with Today View on the left. The status bar includes a circular, flexible system that nestles into the corner of the screen, showing relevant information like Wi-Fi, cellular strength, battery, and more. The Dynamic Island is also redesigned to fit vertically on the side of the outer and inner displays, and expands to show Live Activities and alerts.
Apple apps are already optimized for iPhone Duo, and developers can easily adapt their apps using the new and updated APIs in the latest SDKs, and upcoming support for iPhone Duo in Device Hub in Xcode.
Split View allows users to open two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time. Users can also quickly swap between apps; open two windows of the same app; easily have a conversation with Siri AI while looking at content on the other side of the screen; and save pairs of apps to come back to later.
Set iPhone Duo down and it enters StandBy on either the outer or inner display — even when it’s not charging — turning the device into a photo frame, hub for widgets, clock, and more.
