Encrypted Private Messaging Platform Signal Rolls Out Secure Backups for iPhone

Encrypted messaging platform Signal has announced that it is now offering secure backups on the iPhone, allowing users to save and restore messages if they lose access to their handset.

Free and paid versions of Signal’s secure backups are available. While the free version allows users to save up to 100MB of text messages, photos, videos, and files from the last 45 days, the paid, $1.99 per month tier allows users to backup all of their text messages, as well as up to 100GB of media which can be older than 45 days.

The end-to-end backups can only be accessed using a 64-character recovery key generated by the user’s device. Be warned you must keep that key safe and accessible, because if it is lost, Signal cannot assist you in recovering your backups.

Secure backups are easy to enable. Simply open the Settings menu, go to Backups, then tap Setup -> Enable Backups. A recovery key will then be generated and you can then select from a free or paid plan.

Signal first began offering secure backups on the Android platform back in September, and the company says the feature is also on its way to its desktop app. The developer says its long term goal is to allow users to transfer their message history between platforms.
