New server-side Apple code indicates Volkswagen is planning to offer Apple Wallet car keys support in its future vehicles, reports MacRumors. While the code indicates support is on the way, it doesn’t offer any details as to when the feature will be offered or which models will support the feature.
Users can use their car key stored on their iPhone or Apple Watch to lock, unlock, and start your car. The way the key is used and the features available depend on the model of the car. Apple added support for the NFC-based digital keys to the Wallet app back in 2022.
Apple announced the feature at WWDC 2022, saying 13 vehicle manufacturers would “soon” be adding support. The car makers included GM carlines, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Others on the list included Acura, Chery, Hongqi, Lucid Motors, Porsche, Rivian, Smart, Tata Motors, Voyah, and WEY.
The feature is already offered by Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and select other automakers in various countries.
