Apple unveiled its long-awaited iPhone Duo, the first foldable iPhone ever. During the presentation it was mentioned that the Duo has “limited support” for the Apple Pencil.
The Apple Pencil will work with both the inner and outer iPhone Duo displays. Unfortunately, there’s no guarntee that the stylus you already use with your iPad can be used with your brand new foldy iPhone.
Apple says that you’ll need the Apple Pencil with USB-C for the iPhone Duo, so if you have the Apple Pencil Pro, you’ll need to do some shopping. Luckily, the Apple Pencil with USB-C is reasonably priced, going for just $79 ($69 at Amazon), compared to the $129 ($99 at Amazon) it takes to purchase an Apple Pencil Pro.
Why doesn’t the iPhone Duo support the Apple Pencil Pro? One reason could be that the Apple Pencil Pro recharges from the magnetic surface of a compatible iPad. However, the iPhone Duo lacks such a surface, so there would be no way to recharge the Pro. The USB-C model charges via a USB-C charging port hidden behind a sliding cap.
Keep in mind that the Apple Pencil with USB-C lacks several of the features that Apple Pencil Pro users enjoy. It lacks haptic feedback, squeeze, sensitivity, double-tap, barrel roll, and Find My. Time will only tell if users will miss those features on the iPhone Duo. It will all come down to how the stylus is used on the device.
Apple Pencil support will not be available when the iPhone Duo becomes available, and we only know that it’s “coming later this year.”
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo will begin on October 16, and will be available on October 23.
