Apple Testing Prototypes of Screenless Fitness Band

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is working on a screen-free activity tracker similar to Whoop’s line of activity bands, which are wrist-worn trackers providing 24/7 monitoring, but no display.

The report says Apple has been tinkering with devices in the category for several months. While it has eveloped prototypes, the folks in charge at the Cupertino firm haven’t decided whether or noit to move forward with the project. The project does have some big shots behind it, including Apple chair Tim Cook and services chief Eddy Cue. Cue now leads Apple’s health teams. Cue is reportedly pushing for developing wearables with simpler interfaces, such as the Whoop or Oura Ring.

The prototypes consist of a fabric band attached to a computing module that rests on the wrist. It sports sensors to track heart rate and other metrics, similar to the Apple Watch.

Even if Apple moves forward with the screen-free tracker, we likely would not see it launch until at least 2028.
