Meet Apple’s New $299 HomeView Smart Home Hub

Meet Apple’s New $299 HomeView Smart Home Hub

Apple today unveiled the “HomeView,” its long-awaited smart home hub featuring a 7-inch display. The $299 device is available in two versions: One with a speaker base and a second model that mounts on the wall. Pre-orders start today, and it will hit store shelves on November 13.

Apple says the HomeView is “designed to be central to the home and personal to everyone in it.” The new smart home hub has a 7-inch Liquid Retina display, and provides entertainment, connection, and smart home management all in one place. Apple says the devices functions are all designed with privacy and security at the core, whether it’s playing music, making FaceTime calls, monitoring your home, or controlling hands-free automations with voice control.

“Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “It recognizes your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience, fills the room with incredible sound, keeps you connected to the people who matter most with FaceTime, and makes it easy to control your smart home. And it’s powered by Apple Intelligence with Siri AI at its core, drawing on personal context from your iPhone to help you find what you need and get more done, all while keeping everyone’s information private and secure.”

HomeView can recognize users by their faces, allowing user to securely access their personal content in Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, Reminders, and Find My. HomeView features Siri AI, the new, more capable, and more conversational version of Siri that we have waited for, lo these many years. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled device, HomeView can tap into a user’s personal context, such as their Calendar, Messages, and relevant information across their apps, to provide more helpful, personalized responses.

Table Model

HomeView is designed to fit in any space, and it can be placed on a tabletop or be wall-mounted to fit in spaces like an entryway or a hallway. The table model’s aluminum design boasts a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and a domed speaker base connected by a stainless steel hinge that allows user to tilt the screen for comfortable viewing on tabletops of any height. Apple says the HomeView will fit in on a kitchen counter, nightstand, or side table. The new smart home hub is available in four colors — silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray — and each color option includes a matching cable.

It features adaptive display technologies, including True Tone, to react to changing light during the day. Automatic brightness adjusts from 500 nits, bright enough to be easy to see even in a brightly sunlit room, down to just 0.3 nits, making it ideal for use on the nightstand. The HomeView’s control interface intelligently adjusts based on the user’s distance, showing simple information that’s easily viewable from across the room, while providing more details as the user steps closer.

Wall-Mounted Model

The wall-mounted model of the HomeView is available in space gray and silver, and boasts the same 7-inch Liquid Retina display, powerful features, and rich audio. It can be attached to a wall using three purpose-built mounts from Schneider Home, and it can be self-installed or you can have a professional come in and perform the installation.

A Personalized Experience

HomeView has the ability to recognize up to six people, providing a personalized experience for each individual user, including their own personalized Home Screen with apps and widgets. A user’s personal content is kept private from other users, while shared content, like photo albums and music, can be easily enjoyed by everyone, including guests.

Siri AI, Powered by Apple Intelligence

HomeView features the long-awaited Siri AI, powered by Apple Intelligence. The new Siri has broader world knowledge, and communicates with the users by being more conversational and having personal context understanding and onscreen awareness.

Siri AI can do more for users that have an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone or iPad, as it can take action across apps, drawing on relevant information from Messages and Calendar, the user’s Apple Music playlists, and draw on the user’s personal context. The expressiveness and pace of Siri’s voice can be customized until it’s to the user’s liking. On these devices, including the HomeView, users can carry on a conversation with Siri like never before. Conversations that start on HomeView seamlessly continue in the Siri app, using iCloud to privately sync history across a user’s products, so the conversation can be picked up on the user’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro.

Even users lacking an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad will benefit from Siri AI’s broad world knowledge; rich, natural conversations; and better music discovery.

HomeView’s Customizable Faces

The Flow face dynamically responds to physical presence and movement, transforming HomeView into a piece of interactive art. Even Snoopy makes an appearance on HomeView (gotta get as much out of that Peanut licensing deal as possible, right?), with animations reflecting the time of day, the weather, sporting events, and holiday moments.

Entertainment and Communication Options

HomeView’s  custom-engineered acoustic system offers an exceptional listening experience, thanks to two custom full-range drivers in the display, providing crisp and clean sounds that fills up the room with Spatial Audio. A down-firing woofer and two force-cancelling passive radiators are built into the base, offering excellent bass extension.

HomeView is powered by Apple silicon and includes real-time system sensors, allowing advanced computational audio that continuously optimizes loudness and bass response at any volume. Even the wall-mounted version delivers rich sound with two custom drivers and computational audio tuned specifically for on-wall placement.

Apple Music listeners can enjoy animated album art and lyrics, as well as Apple Podcasts, Apple News, Apple TV, and compatible third-party audio and video apps. Handoff allows users to continue enjoying a song they were playing in the car by placing their iPhone in front of the HomeView display. By having multiple HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini, and AirPlay-compatible speakers around the house, users can enjoy their favorite music throughout their entire home, thanks to multiroom audio.

HomeView makes it easy for users to stay in touch, while also getting things done around the house. FaceTime and Center Stage keep everyone in the frame, even when participants are moving around the room. Messages can be read and answered by voice or with the onscreen keyboard, while Intercom lets users broadcast a quick message to a single room or the whole house, via other HomeView and HomePod speakers, or even personal devices like iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. Cooks will be able to make use of HomeView as a sort of a sous chef, which can convert recipes from the web into step-by-step instructions, provide hands-free timer control, help with ingredient tracking, and more.

Smart Home Dashboard

Users can securely control their smart home by touch or with their voice using Siri AI. Users will have the ability to view camera feeds, adjust the thermostat and lights, locking doors, or closing blinds. The Home Modular face offers instant access to users’ favorite accessories, while the Home Camera face can livestream up to nine video feeds at once, letting users keep an eye on their home, both inside and outside.

Users with a supported iCloud+ subscription can use HomeView with compatible cameras to deliver intelligent, end-to-end encrypted recognition of people, faces, pets, packages, and vehicles. Household members are notified the moment someone arrives at the front door. Video descriptions of HomeKit Secure Video footage allows users to quickly understand the events in a video clip without even viewing it. HomeView can also detect the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and alerts users on their iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.

HomeView is compatible with the new Apple Home Collection, a new lineup of smart home cameras, thermostats, and a lock designed in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. But don’t worry, it also works with Apple Home and Matter accessories.

Privacy and Security

As you might expect from an Apple product, HomeView was built with privacy and security at its core. The HomeView and the A18 chip powering it include Secure Exclaves: protected and compartmentalized runtimes used to process camera and microphone data separately from the rest of the system. Data that is processed and analyzed in Secure Exclaves cannot be accessed by the HomeView software, apps, the user, or Apple. Even when HomeView is shared by the whole household, content in apps like Messages and Calendar is only displayed when the enrolled user is recognized by their face, and when their paired and recently unlocked iPhone or iPad is present.

Siri requests on HomeView can use on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute. When processed in Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or any other party.
