After years of trying to compete with the iPod with their Zune media player, Microsoft has now officially pulled the plug. According to Bloomberg, weak ongoing sales are the source for the product’s cancellation.
Microsoft originally released the Zune in 2006, touting the device as eventually becoming an iPod killer and overtaking Apple. After failing to even break into the top 5 of devices in this category, it was clear to the world that the Zune was not the rampant success it was meant to be.

The only thing MS produces that isn’t total crap is excel – but I frankly get along fine with Numbers. As an engineer working in research and development, I know that if I involve anything windows-based, my work will become unnecessarily more difficult, and my progress will slow. I therefore stick to mac and linux platforms. After many years of dealing with microsoft products and their inherent lower functionality and lower user-friendliness, I am not at all surprised that zune is dead. I’m only surprised it took this long, as I knew it was a crappy knockoff the first time I saw one.
I am not sure about everyone else’s experience with Zune, but I actually liked mine. It worked for two years even after buying it new and being accidentally washed, dropped, slammed and thrown through out that entire time. Yes, Microsoft is HORRIBLE when it comes to giving a damn about anything but money, but when it comes to Zune it’s a product I liked and still do.
I’ve had a Zune since the first one came out. It is a great system and i like it better then the Ipod. The only problem, besides microsoft not caring about their customers, is the lack of third party periphials. There is a ton of stuff for ipods but try to find an alarm clock for Zune and you’ll be hard pressed. i’m sorry to hear the Zune is dead. The Zune operating system is a million times better then itunes.
