Apple TV+ Movies Received Zero Oscar Nominations This Year

Apple TV+ scored a Best Picture award at 94th Academy Awards in 2022, making it the first film from a streaming service to win a Best Picture statue. However, last week’s Oscar nominations revealed that Apple will have no chance at a similar win this year, as it received zero nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced its nominations for the 97th Oscars and Apple TV+ missed out on being nominated in every category.

This is due to Apple’s recent change in its release strategy, which ruined its chances at an Oscar.

Apple TV+ original plans to offer its films in wide theatrical release before streaming them on the service proved to be a bit ambitious, making the company reassess its strategy.

The company had released several high-profile films, including Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, and Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. All three films flopped at the box office.

This made Apple change its movie release strategy, deciding to release only a few theatrical film, and to focus on streaming content.

While Apple is committed to spending on quality content for its service, it is working on keeping a tight rein on the pursestrings. The streaming service will reduce the number of big theatrical releases and will keep a close eye on the budgets for its films. Apple’s target budget for most films under $100 million each.

Apple is expected to continue to release the occasional blockbuster from time to time. It’s next big release will be the $300 million Brad Pitt film, F1, its most expensive production so far. F1 is scheduled for a June 2025 release.
