Apple Sells 1 Million Lion Licenses On Launch Day, Rakes In A Cool $30 Million

Apple Sells 1 Million Lion Licenses On Launch Day, Rakes In A Cool $30 Million

The numbers are in: Apple has just reported that OS X Lion was downloaded over 1 million times on Wednesday, and considering the lack of overhead, shipping costs, and packaging, that’s a pretty sweet $30 million deal for Apple.

Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller put it particularly well when he said, “Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic…Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.”

In addition to Phil considering it the best release of Mac OS ever, it’s also the fastest-selling OS release in Apple’s history. Of course, with it’s bucketload of new features and enhancements, it’s really no surprise that Lion has been so popular.

Further, now that OS X is no longer a physical product, Apple now benefits more financially from each OS X sale than ever before – that’s a cool $30 million in revenue in less than 24 hours, not even counting all the new Mac Minis and MacBook Airs they must have sold!
