Rumor: iPhone 5 And Cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 To Launch In Late September

It’s often been rumored that Apple would be releasing a new and cheaper model of the iPhone alongside the iPhone 5. A new report from Reuters backs this up, saying that both the iPhone 5 and a “new” 8GB iPhone 4 will be released near the end of September.

The leak occurred early this morning, and suggests that Apple will be making an 8GB model of the iPhone 4 using flash memory from “a Korean company”, which probably means Samsung. While the Reuters report didn’t leak any pricing info, it’s likely that such a model would be available at $99 or less with a contract, especially if Apple replaces some of the glass with polycarbonate.

The rumor also suggests that this new and cheaper iPhone 4 model could arrive alongside the iPhone 5 at the same time. The report claims the device as being very similar to the iPhone 4, but with a larger display, an eight-megapixel camera, and a better antenna, all of which we have heard before.

It’s also extremely likely that the iPhone 5 will use Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, a dual-mode GSM/CDMA radio to allow it to connect to both Verizon and AT&T in the US, and may gain a 64GB storage option.

This report contradicts previous reports strongly suggesting an October 7 launch with pre-orders beginning on or around September 30th.
