Smartphones Set to Outnumber Humans by Year’s End

The world’s obsession with smartphones is pretty obvious at this point, and there have been more smartphones made than I care to think about. In fact, according to Cisco, there will likely be more smartphones on the planet than humans by the end of the year!

As part of Cisco’s mobile data traffic forecast, the company uses statistical observations from 2011 in order to make some interesting projections about the future of smartphones, such as smartphones exceeding the human population by the end of this year, and two-thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic consisting of video by 2016.

Perhaps the bigger question here is what’s happening to all those smartphones? I sure hope a lot of them are being recycled, otherwise that’s a whole mountain (literally) of old or unwanted devices poking around in landfills!
