Review: PhoneSoap – Sanitize Your iPhone While You Charge It

You don’t have to be germaphobic to understand that your iPhone could be one of the most germ ridden things you come into contact with during the day. You lay the device on tables and counters, where God knows what else has occupied that space, you use the device while in the restroom, you breathe on it all day. What can you do to keep it relatively germ-free?

Overview

The PhoneSoap sanitizes your iPhone using UV light, while it charges it. The device, a successfully funded Kickstarter project, is now available for $59.95.

Simply plug the PhoneSoap – it looks like a tiny tanning bed – into an AC outlet, and plug your device, via its charging cable, into the USB port inside the box. Then, place your device inside the PhoneSoap, and close the top. The two UV-C lights inside the box then proceed to bathe your device in UV light that the company claims will kill 99.99% of bacteria and germs in about five minutes.

The PhoneSoap website explains

“The two UV-C lamps in PhoneSoap Charger produce a very specific wavelength of light which encompass your phone and pass through the cell walls of bacteria and virus to impair their DNA. Once the DNA is compromised, the cells die and can no longer cause infections or disease. The best part, PhoneSoap Charger kills “SuperBugs” that have developed resistance to the chemicals and antibiotics that used to be effective.”

The charger features an indicator light that lets you know when charging is complete. Also, you don’t need to worry about missing a call or notification, as the PhoneSoap has acoustic ports that allow you to hear your device’s notification sounds.

The dimensions of the PhoneSoap are as follows:

INNER DIMENSIONS (SANITIZING SPACE):

Millimeters: 153 L X 95 W X 20 H
Inches: 6 L x 3.74 W x .78 H

OUTER DIMENSIONS:

Millimeter: 195 L x 127 W X 44.8 H
Inches: 7.6 L X 5 W X 1.76 H

Devices up to 6 x 3.74 x 0.78 in (153 x 95 x X 20 mm) can fit inside the box. The PhoneSoap can sanitize any device that will fit inside the unit. The USB port allows you to charge any device that uses USB charging cables while it is being sanitized.

Does it Work?

While I don’t have any sophisticated equipment that can measure germs on surfaces, The Discovery Channel Canada took the device to a lab with said equipment, and the results may surprise you! See the video at Discovery Channel Canada. (Sorry, no embedding code available that I could find.)

Verdict

While I am not a germaphobe, I have found myself using the PhoneSoap to charge and sanitize my iPhone when it is available to me. I am the type of person who always washes his hands after using the restroom. However, I am guilty of using my iPhone while availing myself of the restroom facilities, so the PhoneSoap can only help.

While there are germ-killing wipes available for devices, PhoneSoap has the advantage of being a one-stop remedy for killing germs on your device while simultaneously charging the device’s battery.

I highly recommend the PhoneSoap to anyone who is concerned about the germs and bacteria that may be living on your portable device.
