Apple’s New Earth Day Ad Highlights its Eco-Friendly Data Centers

In celebration of today’s “Earth Day” celebration, Apple has released a new ad highlighting its eco-friendly data centers and its iMessaging service. The ad, entitled “Renewable Energy,” takes place entirely in the Messages app.

The ad focuses on how Apple’s data centers use 100% renewable energy to power their operations. Set to a peppy soundtrack, (“Ophelia” by The Lumineers), the ad shows how every message sent through iMessage goes through an Apple data center.

Along the way, the ad throws in some interesting facts and figures, such as Apple’s data centers are powered by 100 percent renewable resources, including solar, wind, hydroelectric and natural gas. Apple handles “tens of billions” of messages every day. Apple says that means every time you send a message, you’re showing the Earth some love just by using the service. The ad ends with just the green stemmed Apple Earth Day logo.

Apple’s data center use 100% renewable energy, while 93% of Apple’s facilities worldwide are powered by renewable energy. Apple’s new Campus 2 headquarters will run on 100$ renewable power.

Last week, many Apple Store locations changed the leaf portion of their store logo to green, in celebration of Earth Day, which is a tradition for the company. Also last week, a special App Store section called “Apps for Earth” launched promoting 27 apps, of which the proceeds of sales will be shared with the World Wildlife Fund.
