College and university students who are pinching pennies will be glad to hear Apple will now offer a $4.99 per month Apple music subscription to students enrolled at an eligible educational institution. That’s a 50% discount off the usual $9.99 per month single user subscription fee.

The option isn’t just arriving in the U.S., though. Students in other countries, including the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, will also be able to take advantage of the new membership option.

The actual cost of the membership is expected to vary from country to country, due to exchange rates, but all markets will see the 50% discount on a student membership.

Students will be able to take advantage of the discount for up to four continuous or non-continuous years, so scholars who take a break between semesters can still sign up for a student membership upon their return to school. Those enrolled in a Master’s program are also eligible for a student membership. The program is aimed at college and university students, regardless of the degree they’re working toward.

The new membership will be made available starting today, and will be available to both new and existing subscribers, who can either sign up or change their membership from the web or the Apple Music mobile application on iOS and Android devices.

All student eligibility verification will be handled by leading student verification technology provider, UNiDAYS, in order to ensure that those who are signing up as students are actually enrolled at an eligible school.

In other Apple Music-related news, a report earlier this week said Apple is revamping its year-old streaming music service, to make it easier to use. The user interface will be redesigned to be “bolder, yet simpler,” and will receive a black and white motif, but will also have more of a focus on colorful album art. The redesign will also replace the “New” tab with a “Browse” option, design to aid in content discovery. The new app is expected to debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
