Sony S1 And S2 To Compete With iOS This Autumn

Sony will be releasing its first two tablets this autumn which will run a variant of Google’s Android tablet OS. The S1 is a full size tablet that looks like a soft cover book folded back on itself while the S2 is a Nintendo DS-style dual screen clamshell design.

It seems Sony is going after Apple with a one-two punch taking on the iPad with the full size S1 while going after the iPod Touch/iPhone with the clamshell S2. Unfortunately for Sony, Apple will have an 18 month lead and their strategy seems unclear. Are they intending the S2 to be a replacement for PSP? Don’t they already have a handheld system known as Xperia Play? Is anyone else confused?

CNET has a nice photo gallery of the Sony tablets if you want a sneak preview.

James first bit into Apple when his mom and dad bought an Apple IIe in 1986. He switched to Wintel in the mid 90s when Apple was in a tailspin and back again to an iBook in 2005 when things were looking brighter. Hopefully there is no turning back to the dark side now.
