Macs and iPads Could Soon Use The Same Processor

Following the announcement of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the possibility of having iPads and Macs running on the same chip is now very real, MacGeneration reports. When speaking to the Wall Street Journal in an interview after the announcement, CEO Tim Cook was open to the idea:

“We think about everything. We don’t close things off.”

Having a Mac run on a custom built Apple chip would be awesome, and would make them completely self-sustainble, as they would no longer need Intel. The setup would presumably be similar to when they ran their computers on G4 and G5 chips, which were also built by Apple.

Furthermore, having the expertise of ARM, Apple’s chip designers built into every Mac would definitely affect performance, especially as the new Mac OS X Mountain Lion would presumably be tailor made to the chip, while Intel’s chips are seen in almost every computer and are not tailored to any specific OS.
