New clues found in OS X Mountain Lion back up previous clues found in OS X 10.7.3 and Apple’s iMessage beta in suggesting that Apple is actively working on preparing OS X for future Retina-display Macs and displays.
Ars Technica reports that additional images found in the version of iMessage included with Apple’s latest developer preview of Mountain Lion reveal double-size Retina-ready graphics present in the app, such as the below phone icon, which erroneously appears when using the app.
The fact that the icon pops up where a standard icon should fit suggests that Apple may be getting much closer to releasing ultra-high resolution Macs, and has been testing their own apps with high-res imagery to make sure everything looks like it should!
With OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion set for release this summer, and new Ivy Bridge processors (expected to be included in the next generation of Macs) set to be ready in roughly the same time frame, it seems very plausible that Apple could release updated high-res MacBooks within the coming months.
