First 802.11ac Router Set For Release, Could Upcoming Macs Be Compatible?

Netgear have announced the first commercially available 802.11ac router, which will be able to deliver over 1 Gigabit speeds in 5 Ghz mode. The R6300 will sell for $199, and while there are no commercially available devices that will make full use of it yet, this could suggest that Apple’s new Mac lineup would feature the faster WiFi.

Apple are always front runners when it comes to fast WiFi, and their devices normally have the fastest possible wireless technology built in. The 802.11ac specification is three times faster than 802.11n, the current standard, so it would not surprise me if this latest technology was included.

Furthermore, seeing as gigabit speeds could be obtained over Wifi, it would eliminate the need for Apple to include an ethernet port on their Macs, saving a considerable amount of space, even though for desktops such as the iMac and the Mac Pro it could still come in handy.
