Apple Exec: Revamped iMacs and Mac Pros Coming in 2013

Apple Exec: Revamped iMacs and Mac Pros Coming in 2013

Notably absent from yesterday’s WWDC keynote were updates to Apple’s desktop Mac lines – the iMac and the Mac Pro. While the Mac Pro did get a quiet lackluster update yesterday, the iMac wasn’t mentioned at all, leaving some eager updaters wondering why.

New York Times technology consultant David Pogue may have an answer! According to Pogue, Apple is not actually ignoring desktop Macs – in fact, Pogue cites an anonymous Apple exec in stating that newly designed models are coming, and are likely to be released next year!

The New York Times (via MacRumors):

Many Apple observers also wonder if Apple thinks that desktop computers are dead, since not a word was said about the iMac and Mac Pro. An executive did assure me, however, that new models and new designs are under way, probably for release in 2013.

While this is only a rumor for now, it should be noted that Pogue is typically a highly reliable source – and, at least where the iMac is concerned, a new model in 2013 seems likely, regardless of whether the machines are updated with new Ivy Bridge processors in the near future.

It’s worth keeping Pogue’s claims at arm’s length for now. I’ll file this one under “cautiously optimistic.”
