How to: Have E-Mail Read To You On Your Mac

Rather than reading emails for hours on a display, did you know that your Mac can read your emails to you?

Simply select the body of the email you wish your Mac to read and then navigate to Edit > Speech > Start Speaking as can be seen below:

Once this is selected your email will be read to you by the default voice as set in the System Preferences. To change the voice in Mountain Lion, simply proceed to System Preferences and select Text to Speech. Within this area you will be able to select alternative voices.

To stop the email from being read simply navigate to Edit > Speech > Stop Speaking

If you don’t select the body of text prior to activating Start Speaking then the selected email will be spoken in its entirety including the email addresses and subject title.
