Square Launches New Gift Cards, Complete With Passbook Support

Square has been making waves with iOS and Android users since they unveiled their free Apple-like reader a few years back, allowing anyone at all to accept credit card payment from their smartphones. Now Square is making waves once again, and has updated their iOS app with Passbook support.

Even more exciting, Square has now launched new gift cards, allowing users to send a voucher that can be redeemed at any business which accepts Square as a form of payment.

From Square’s news page (via TheNextWeb):

Square, the company making commerce easy for everyone, has launched a new way to send meaningful gifts to friends anywhere, Square gift cards. There are now a quarter of a million local businesses across the country accepting gift cards. Using Square Wallet on their phone, customers can treat their friends to their favorite local business.

Square gift cards are fun to send and fun to use. Anyone can share a local shopping experience with her friends and family instantly from her phone. Square Wallet automatically saves gift cards so customers can easily redeem them.

To use the feature, both the merchant and the user must have the latest version of Square’s mobile app – Square Register for merchants, and Square Wallet for consumers. Both updates are available immediately from the App Store.
