Apple Neglects to Renew SSL Certificate – Breaks Mac App Store Updates

It appears that someone at Apple was so excited about the three-day Memorial Day weekend that they forgot to update at least one company server’s SSL certificate, as several Mac App Store users have reported that they receive an error message when attempting to update apps they’ve bought from the Mac App Store. The error message is seen below:

MacRumors notes that Swscan.apple.com is one of several servers that Software Update uses to communicate with Apple. The apparent problem is that the security certificate for the server appears to have expired. The certificate was originally valid from May 22, 2012 to May 24, 2014.

Apple will need to fix this error on their side. In the meanwhile, users can manually download updates for Apple’s own software from Apple’s support site. Updates for third-party apps look to be delayed until Apple updates the SSL certificate.
