CES 2020: LG Unveils ‘Real’ 8K TVs With AirPlay and HomeKit Support

Just ahead of CES next week, Korean tech firm LG has unveiled a lineup of “real” 8K TVs that offer support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

LG will show off eight new 8K models a CES, including top-of-the-line 77- and 88-inch Signature OLED TVs (88/77 OLED ZX). In addition, the Korean firm will debut 65- and 75-inch NanoCell, or QLED, models (75/65 Nano99, 75/65 Nano97, 75/65 Nano95) split into three pricing tiers.

The new TV sets, which LG’s webOS smart TV platform, are all compatible with Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, as well as popular virtual assistants Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

AirPlay 2 allows LG TV owners to connect their sets to other devices and control media streaming via Siri. HomeKit offers users the ability to control connected devices from the Home app.

LG says its new “real” 8K sets meet 8K Ultra HD definition standards set by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). LG’s models meet or surpass a minimum 50% contrast modulation threshold, a stipulation needed for “real” 8K reproduction, according to LG.

The new sets accept 8K content from HDMI and USB inputs and offer support for HEVC, VP9, and AV1 codecs up to 60 frames per second.

“LG is deeply committed to providing consumers with an outstanding viewing experience,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With LG 8K OLED and NanoCell TVs, customers can know they are getting future-proofed products that will deliver mesmerizing picture quality regardless of the format.”

LG’s 8K lineup will be on show during CES 2020 from January 7-10 at the company’s booth.
